Tips On Decorating Boxes

A decorated box can be much more appealing than one that is plain.

Boxes are useful for everything from giving gifts to storing items. While some boxes may not be decorative starting out, putting your own creative touches to them can make them worthy of giving or displaying proudly. Some simple tips can allow you to take a plain box from boring to sensational in no time.

Limit Glue Use

Using too much glue may cause a cardboard box to wrinkle or peel. It can also cause certain decorative materials that you want to put on the box to become unusable from being too saturated. When applying glue, use a very thin layer; apply it in long, even strokes to distribute it.

Go 3D

Putting flat decorations, such as wrapping paper or magazine ads, onto a box is a good way to decorate it, but putting three-dimensional (3D) decorations on it can make it that much more interesting. For boxes that are being used by a child, consider gluing on stuffed or ceramic bears or other animals. Silk flowers can make a beautiful touch for any box.

Hide Flaws With Cloth or Paper Coverings

Some boxes don't look particularly decorative, so using cloth or paper to cover it can make a big difference. It is also an inexpensive way to cover up old and stained boxes and give them new life. You can use many items including old fabric, wallpaper, scrapbook paper or wrapping paper. When using fabric, stick to using a fabric glue for better results.

Decorate the Inside

As decorative as you can make the outside, an attractive inside is also important. If you used flat decorative material for the outside, consider using the same for the inside. Use a contrasting flat material for the inside if you used materials to create a 3D look for the outside. Applying material to the inside may be a bit difficult so apply glue to one side at a time to prevent from having to rush before it dries.

Use Unconventional Embellishments

Decorative beads can look wonderful on a box.

Another option for decorating the outside is to use small embellishments, such as beads or rhinestones. Rhinestones and beading applied in a straight line will take the most work to apply as they will have to be put on one at a time. Another option for applying the beading is to apply a layer of glue all over one side of the box, then dump the beads on so they fall in a haphazard fashion and continue until the entire surface of the box is covered.
