Make A Kitchen Broom Closet

A broom closet will keep your broom and other cleaning supplies hidden.

A kitchen broom closet is a convenient place to store cleaning supplies and other items you do not want company to see. The broom closet does not need to be very large, but it allows you to keep your cleaning supplies away from your food and your dishes. It should be in a place that is inconspicuous and that is easy to get to when you are cleaning up the kitchen. Designing and building the closet yourself allows you to create a closet perfect for your needs. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine your broom closet location in your kitchen, easiest in a corner of the room. If you choose a narrow closet you may choose a cupboard door instead of a traditional door. Decide what you want to store in the broom closet, since this will determine how big you need the closet. Measure the space and find the studs, since you will attach the new closet walls, and this will affect the size of your closet. When purchasing the supplies remember that you will need to drywall both the inside and outside of the closet.

2. Build the frame for your closet walls using 2-by-4s. You will need to build a frame for the sidewall and frame for the front of the closet. The frame for the front of the closet should include a space for the door you will install in the closet. You need to frame in a place to install the top and sides of the door frame.

3. Nail the frame into the floor, and the ceiling joists, as well as the studs in the wall, where you want it installed. Cut the bottom out of the frame for the door.

4. Hang drywall on the inside and outside of the closet, using screws. Spackle the seams of the drywall and screw holes. Wait for the spackle to dry, sand the spackle smooth, and then paint the walls.

5. Install the shelving system. Leave enough room to store the broom and other cleaning supplies upright.

6. Remove the door from the frame by taking out the hinge screws. Put the closet door frame in the hole you framed out for the door in the wall and nail it in place. Hang the door by lining up the hinges in the door and the door frame and screwing the hinge screws into place.
