Build & Install Closet Organizers

Install shelving units in your closet to optimize storage space for shoes, clothing and other accessories.

Building and installing closet organizers saves your family money and allows you to create custom storage for all your clothing, accessories, shoes and other personal items. Installing a closet organizer into your closet easily becomes a pain when trying to fit pieces through the doorway. For best results and to ease the process, install as you build your closet organization system Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove all objects from the closet including shelves, clothing rods and any other storage devices you do not want to retain with your new organization system. Move all clothing to plastic storage containers or another closet and away from potential damage in your work area. Remove your closet doors from the hinges with a manual screwdriver to get those out of your way and make the construction and installation process easier.

2. Design a layout for your new closet organization system. Look at the empty closet and decide how you want to position hanging room and shelves. Use this time to make rough drawings on your wall with a pencil of possible shelf and clothing rod placements.

3. Decide heights for each shelf you plan to install and use a tape measure and level to make darker lines to mark the position, length and width of each shelving unit you intend to place. These lines will guide you in both cutting appropriate-sized wooden pieces and installing mounting boards.

4. Install mounting boards for all shelves you intend to place in the closet. Cut one-by-three-inch wooden shelf support boards into the necessary lengths to match each shelf section length using a power saw. Cut additional pieces from the shelf supports to match the depth of each shelf that sits against a side wall of the closet.

5. Attach the mounting boards to the closet walls. To do this, align the shelf support boards with the lines you drew in step three. Locate wall studs with a stud finder and drive two and one-half-inch wood screws through the support boards and into the wall studs across the entire length of the boards.

6. Cut sections of half-inch thick plywood to match the required lengths and depths of each shelf you need for your closet organization system. Set the plywood shelf pieces into place over the shelf supports and drive one-inch nails down through the shelf pieces and into the narrow ends of the shelf support boards.

7. Cut sections of the plywood to fit the height and depth requirements to any side pieces of shelving units. To install these pieces, set them into place against the horizontal shelf pieces and drive 1-inch wood nails through the vertical sides and into the edges of the horizontal pieces.

8. Install rod mounts to attach your clothing rod for hanging clothes in the closet. The rod mounts should come packaged with the appropriate hardware to attach the mounting brackets between the wall and shelving units. Use a level and tape measure to ensure you mount the brackets level horizontally.

9. Measure the distance between the mounting brackets and adjust the length of your closet clothing rod to match this size. Set the clothing rod over the mounting brackets and push the rod down into the brackets.
