Hang A Shelving Track On Drywall

Drywall is basically pressed chalk, generally 1/2- to 5/8-inch thick. It's made to cover walls, not to hold weight. It's best to secure shelving track to the wall studs behind the drywall. However, if you need to hang shelving tracks on drywall and you can't adjust the location so it hits the studs, you can use screw anchors to do the job. Only use this method for shelves that are not going to hold heavy items like books. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Mark on the drywall where you want your shelving with your level and pencil. Use horizontal lines for the shelves and vertical lines for the tracks.

2. Hold one track up to one vertical line and use your pencil to mark on the wall where the mounting holes are on the track. Do the same for the second track.

3. Drill holes at each of the marks you made for the mounting holes. Set a plastic screw anchor in each one and tap it with your hammer until the rim of the anchor is flush with the wall.

4. Reload your drill with a screwdriver bit. Set one of the tracks with the mounting holes over the screw anchors. Put the top mounting screw through the track and into the screw anchor. Drill to drive the screw in, slowly. (Don't over-tighten.) Repeat for the other holes on the track and then repeat the whole process with the second track.

5. Hang your shelving brackets on the tracks and add your shelves.
