Get The Most Space From A Small Closet

Use shelves and storage bins to maximize a small closet space.

Organizing a small closet can seem like an impossible task. However, there are certain tricks and procedures that you can employ to maximize the space in a small closet. Implement as many or as few tricks as you desire to make your small closet space work for you and your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Declutter

One of the best ways to maximize closet space in a small area is to get rid of anything that you don't wear or that is out of season. Store clothing that is out of season in boxes on top of the closet or under the bed. Try everything on for fit and style, and eliminate anything that you haven't worn in a year or that no longer fits. Remove other items that you store in the closet, such as holiday decorations.

Shelving

Set up a clothing storage shelf to maximize the wall space in your closet. Small closets typically have one long wall with usable space. Use clear tubs or drawers to store bulkier items, such as sweaters, pants and coats. Use a top shelf to store little-used clothing and supplies, such as extra purses, luggage and hats. Place the shelves on the floor of the closet below the clothing line. If the clothes are too long to allow for storage under them, move all long clothing to the edges of the closet or store them in boxes or drawers.

Shoe Storage

Shoes can take up a lot of space. One of the best ways to maximize a small closet space is to utilize the door. Place a shoe rack on the back of the door to store all shoes. For larger shoes, such as boots, place boot spacers inside of them and store them on higher shelves. You can also store shoes in their original boxes on a shelf. Take a picture of each boot or shoe and tape it to the front of the box so you remember what shoes are in what box.

Floor Space

Floor space is best reserved for shelving or for holding items that will not fit in other locations. If you must store things other than clothing-related items in the closet, the floor is the ideal place to stack boxes and containers holding other items. You can also store a small shoe rack on the floor if the door is not large enough to hold all of your shoes. Store accessories in clear containers on the floor for easy access when dressing.
