Decorate Closet Mirrors

Decorate the mirror doors on your closet to complement your bedroom decor.

Decorate your closet mirror doors if you can't remove or change them, or if you like having the mirror doors, but don't like the plain look of them. Use paint, fabric or images to decorate the mirrors. Choose the option that best fits your decorating plans, whether you want some of the mirror to show through or want the entire surface disguised. Opt for a method that's easy to remove in case you grow tired of the design, especially if you're renting. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Paint

1. Tape clear contact paper onto the mirror, trimming any excess if necessary. Tape the paper to the top of the mirror and along the sides so it's smooth and flush against the mirror doors.

2. Draw your images onto the contact paper with a marker where you want them, whether free-hand or using a stencil. Your images can be butterflies, flowers, vines, words or anything you desire. Cover most of the mirror if you want an art piece more than a mirror, or add a simple border if that's more your style.

3. Trace over the marks you made on the contact paper with a utility knife, cutting the paper away from the mirror. The only part of the contact paper that should be removed is where the actual images will go. For example, if you're painting a daisy onto the mirror, the petals, stem and leaves will be cut out, which allows you to paint only that part of the mirror.

4. Dip your small roller into acrylic paint and roll it directly onto the mirror. Lift the brush and roll again if you want to apply another coat of paint.

5. Remove the tape to take the contact paper down while the paint is still wet. This makes it easier to remove the contact paper and clean up any accidents with a clean rag.

Fabric

6. Measure the mirror, taking both the length and width of the area you want to cover with fabric. Note the measurements on a piece of paper if you're likely to forget.

7. Place the fabric on a bed or the floor, with the decorative side facing down. Use a ruler or measuring tape to mark the fabric where you'll cut it out to apply it to the mirror. Add 1/4 inch to your measurements in case of any mistakes.

8. Cut out the material. Cut out a fabric panel for each mirror door if you're covering more than one door.

9. Spray aerosol adhesive to the mirror and the back of the fabric.

10. Position the fabric on the mirror, pressing it in place. Slide the ruler across the fabric to remove any air bubbles.

11. Trim any excess fabric with a sharp utility or craft knife.

Images

12. Choose a theme for the closet doors, whether it's black-and-white photographs, nature pictures or themed images, such as fire trucks for a child's room.

13. Spray aerosol adhesive or attach double-sided tape to the back of the pictures, if you're using pictures. This is irrelevant if you're using peel-and-stick adhesive decals.

14. Apply the images or shapes directly to the mirror in any pattern you want. Hold them in place for 30 seconds to let them set.
