Chicago Notforprofit Associations

Not-for-profit organizations rely on community support.

Are you looking to do your part in the community? Perhaps you are interested in assisting one of many local not-for-profit associations in the Chicago area? It's no secret that these particular associations rely heavily upon community support, especially in today's discouraging economy. So whether you are thinking about volunteering your time or donating much-needed goods, services or money, there are many organizations in the Chicago area from which to choose. The hardest part is in deciding what association is nearest and dearest to your heart.

After School Matters

Do you have a useful skill or talent that you can share with others? Get involved with a local organization that helps to support today's youth. Put that skill or talent to good use by becoming an after-school program provider. After School Matters is a nonprofit organization that helps keep Chicago teens off the streets by providing and maximizing imaginative and exciting after-school activities and resources, including sports, technology, science, art and writing. This nationally recognized organization is a hands-on program that seeks to expose teens to new and rewarding opportunities that will surely help to inspire their future.

Bottomless Closet

Do you have gently-used work clothes that you don't know what to do with? Consider donating them to a non-profit organization that is on a mission to help local women who are on assistance and who want to work, but don't have suitable clothing to wear to a job interview. The Bottomless Closet, a first of its kind, is a local not-for-profit work-force agency that hopes "to elevate employment potential and marketability of welfare women recipients." There are also many other ways for you to get involved with this organization, including event planning, project management, fund-raising, marketing, grant writing and publicity.

Community Health

Are you concerned about the growing number of uninsured Americans? Community Health, a non-profit organization founded by Dr. Serafino Garella in 1993, has become something of a health refuge for many of Chicago's medically uninsured residents. Since the opening of the clinic, its demand for both financial donations and volunteers has increased steadily over the years. Although many of the volunteer opportunities in this organization require a small fee for training, there are some positions that do not, including administrative assistant, front desk receptionist, intake assistant, referral assistant, women's health assistant and health education instructor. If you are interested in working with the public, as well as making a difference in the health of your community, this may be a good fit for you.

Fatherhood Educational Institute

Take part in educating fathers and promoting positive fatherhood in poverty-stricken neighborhoods. The Fatherhood Educational Institute is a non-profit organization that was designed specifically to educate, thereby empowering incarcerated fathers to assume responsibility for their children both during and after their release from prison. Whether you choose to donate financial support or volunteer your time, you are helping your community pull itself up from its bootstraps, beginning at home with a very important member of the family, the father.
