Fix Bifold Closet Door Hinges

Bi-fold doors save space with their unique design.

Bi-fold door hinges may have problems such as bending, squeaking or the inability to open. If this happens to your doors, a simple fix will return them to operating condition. However, this does not involve tinkering with the hinge. Though a simple part, it is still difficult to repair a broken hinge. A better idea is to replace it. This route saves time and costs about $10 as of 2011. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Lift the bi-fold door off the track by grasping both sides and pushing it up and then down and away from the closet. Set the door on top of a solid, stable surface, such as a woodworking bench. Make sure the door panels are folded over on each other and the hinge plate is exposed.

2. Find the mounting screws inside the broken hinge plate and unscrew all the screws with a power screwdriver.

3. Take the hinge off the door and find a similar hinge replacement at a hardware store.

4. Set the new hinge on the side of the bi-fold doors in the same place where the old hinge was mounted. Line up the mounting holes with the existing holes. Insert and thread all the screws at once by turning them a quarter turn by hand.

5. Drive the screws into place with a screwdriver to mount the hinge. Replace the door inside the track by setting the top pins in first and pushing the door up and into the bottom guides.
