Build A Small Wooden Closet With Doors For Storage

Build your own small, wooden closet.

A small storage closet is ideal for use in spaces where a larger closet would be impractical, such as cramped laundry rooms or bathrooms. A smaller, movable closet can also fit well in hallways or living areas, as it will not dominate the room, and the top of the closet can be used as a shelf for decorative items as well. To build a small wooden closet with doors for storage requires little expertise in carpentry; most do-it-yourselfers can accomplish it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Stand two planks of 48-inch 1-by-12 lumber on their 1-inch edges, with 22 inches between them. Fit two planks of 24-inch 1-by-12 lumber over the ends of the 48-inch planks, which makes a rectangular box shape.

2. Glue the box at the corners, then secure it with four 1 1/2-inch wood screws driven through the 24-inch planks into the 48-inch plank ends.

3. Insert three planks of 22-inch 1-by-12 lumber every 15 inches along the box, for the shelves of the closet. Glue the shelves in place, then secure them with screws through the sides of the 48-inch planks into the ends of the shelves.

4. Center a 24-by-50-inch sheet of 1/2-inch plywood over the box. Secure the plywood in place with 1 1/2-inch screws through the plywood into the edges of the box as well as the shelves. The plywood is for the back of the closet. Turn the box over so that the plywood is on the bottom for now.

5. Lay two planks of 50-inch 1-by-12 lumber flat on your work table. Measure up 25 inches from the bottom of the planks to find the middle, then measure in 2 inches from one long side of the planks and make a mark. These are the two doors of the closet.

6. Position a door handle on each plank at the mark you made. Read the instructions for attaching the door handles, and use the accompanying screws to install them. Typically this involves screwing through the back of the door into the handles on the front of the door.

7. Measure up 10 inches from each end of the doors on the side opposite from where the handle is attached. Position half of a hinge on the edge of the door at this point, and attached the hinges with 1/2-inch screws through the hinge screw holes.

8. Position the two doors over the top of the open side of the closet, placing the sides with the handles toward the center and the sides with the hinges flush with the edge of the closet.

9. Attach the remaining half of the hinges to the side of the closet with 1/2-inch screws, then stand the closet upright and position it as needed for extra storage space.
