Sororities offer female students a home-away-from-home, a small circle of close friends within the larger academic community and opportunities for individual development. Sororities promote philanthropy, sisterhood, leadership skills, community service and academic achievement. The sororities recognized at California State University, Chico are members of either the Panhellenic Council or the Multicultural Greek Council.
Sigma Kappa
Sigma Kappa Sorority was established in 1874 soon after Maine's Colby College began admitting women as equals to men. Chico State's chapter was established in 1959. Sigma Kappa promotes spiritual, intellectual and social growth among women through community service, friendship and loyalty. They support research on Alzheimer's Disease, gerontology and environmentalism.
Gamma Phi Beta
Gamma Phi Beta was established in 1874 at New York's Syracuse University. Their objectives include service to the country, education and social life. Chico State's Epsilon Kappa chapter was established in 1988. They are active in the local community and support charities such as Campfire USA, a coeducational organization similar to Boy Scouts.
Alpha Phi
A prominent leader in the Greek fraternity community, Alpha Phi was founded at Syracuse University in 1872. The Theta Upsilon chapter at Chico State was founded in 1994. Alpha Phi's goals include sisterhood, social communion and justice. Alpha Phi's charities include scholarships, financial aid, leadership training and women's cardiac health.
Alpha Gamma Delta
Established at Syracuse University in 1904, Alpha Gamma Delta has 182 chapters at schools across the country. Alpha Gamma Delta promotes friendship, service, health and leadership. Chico State's chapter organizes several charitable events each year that raise money for researching juvenile diabetes, helping needy sisters, St. Jude's Children's Hospital and the Chico community.
Alpha Delta Pi
The first secret society for women, Alpha Delta Pi was established in 1851 at Georgia's Wesleyan Female College. Alpha Delta Pi supports education through academic scholarships and emergency grants. They participate in charity through the Ronald McDonald Charities, which provide homes-away-from-home for the families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at neighboring hospitals.
Delta Xi Phi
Delta Xi Phi was established at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1994. Chico State's chapter was established in 1998. It is the only national multicultural sorority at Chico State. They are dedicated to community service and the advancement of women. Their members pursue careers in medicine, law, business, education, communications, health and engineering.
Lambda Theta Nu
One of the the first Latina sororities, Lambda Theta Nu was established in 1986 at Chico State after the sorority's founders were rejected by other organizations. Their goals include establishing a social network for Latinas and helping the Hispanic community. They provide scholarships, donate books to after-school programs and operate a community service program.
Lambda Sigma Gamma
The largest multicultural sorority on the West Coast, Lambda Sigma Gamma was founded in 1986 at California State University, Sacramento. Chico's Mu Chapter was established in 1997. Lambda Sigma Gamma promotes education, self improvement and community. Members support the Boys and Girls Club, California Head Start and The Foster Children of Butte County.
Upsilon Kappa Delta
Upsilon Kappa Delta was founded at Chico State in 1993. Upsilon Kappa Delta's goal is setting an example as an ideal multicultural sorority, promoting appreciation for different cultures, promoting equality of different groups and acknowledging different values. Upsilon Kappa Delta also has chapters at Fresno State, San Diego State and Stanislaus State.
