Saving your home movies is important. These memories can be shared for years to come if the proper storage methods are used. Simply saving your movies on video cassettes or DVDs doesn't guarantee that they will last. Storing them in a digital format and keeping them on a server or external hard drive in a safe deposit box will ensure that your memories are preserved.
Instructions
1. Ensure that your video card or video capture card supports either RCA, Firewire or HDMI inputs, as these are the formats modern camcorders can output. If it does not, purchase a suitable video card or video capture card from your local electronics retailer or online.
2. Purchase the necessary cables (RCA, Firewire or HDMI) to connect your camcorder to your computer via your video card or video capture card. This will give you the ability to transfer the video data to your computer.
3. Open Movie Maker, a movie importing and editing program that comes pre-packaged with Windows XP and Vista.
4. Connect your camcorder to the computer video card or video capture card using your RCA, firewire or HDMI cable.
5. Turn on the camcorder so that the computer can detect it.
6. Follow the on-screen steps provided by Movie Maker, which will include importing the video, naming the file and editing your videos.
