Make Money Selling Used Clothes Via Consignment Shops

If you like garage sales anyway, why not sell some of your finds for a profit?

Selling used clothes can be big business. You can make extra cash by cleaning out your closet and selling your used garments at consignment shops. But it doesn't have to stop with your closet; you can buy good name-brand clothes at yard sales and thrift stores and resell them at consignment shops for profit.

Instructions

1. First, find a suitable consignment shop. Choose shops that specialize in the type of clothing that you would like to sell. For example, if you wish to specialize in women's plus-size clothes, contact stores that offer or specialize in plus-size fashion.

2. Ask the consignment shops the right questions. Don't be afraid to interview the consignment shops. Ask the shop owner or manager:

How do you split the profits? Every store is different, but a 50/50 split is common.

How often do you pay?

Which seasons are you accepting?

How would you like to receive my clothes: on hangers, in bags, in totes?

3. Visit the consignment shops. Notice their prices. Notice the types of items offered. Is the store busy? Choose the consignment shop that most closely represents the types of items that you have to offer.

4. Find nice, used clothes to resell. You probably have to look no further than your closet to find merchandise to sell. Once you begin to run low on inventory, you could still earn extra cash on a regular basis by visiting thrift stores and yard sales. The key is to choose brands and styles that you know will sell. Find clothes that are cheap, but in good shape. Many thrift stores such as the Salvation Army and Goodwill offer bag sales. It isn't uncommon to find jeans at yard sales for $1 or $2.

5. Prepare your clothes for delivery. Be sure your clothes look and smell clean. As you pack or hang each piece, look carefully for rips, tears or stains. The consignment shop will probably reject damaged items.
