Plan A Mudroom

If you're tired of the kids traipsing in dirt and mud on shoes and boots or dragging wet umbrellas and raincoats into the house, plan a mudroom. A mudroom is a great way to keep the rest of your house clean by giving everyone a place to dump shoes, coats, hats and even sports gear. Find a closet or hallway and plan a mudroom to keep your home clean. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose a spot near the entrance where the family usually enters the home. Any space can be a mudroom: a laundry room, closet, hallway, garage or even an unused space near the door.

2. Decide what you can place in the mudroom and fill it with the necessary products to accommodate these items. If you're using it for coats and hats, hang coat hooks. If you want to place wet shoes or boots in the mudroom, plan on adding a rubber mat.

3. Make sure the mudroom is big enough for everyone. If you have a large family, make sure the space is large enough for everyone's coats and shoes. Plan a space for everyone by labeling each coat hook or peg and shelf for each family member.

4. Use a space that is properly heated and ventilated. This reduces the likelihood of mildew from wet coats and shoes. Add a floor drain and an overhead exhaust fan vented outside, if possible.

5. Plan to fill the mudroom with accessories such as a chair, mirror, laundry basket and even recycling bins, if the space allows. Make the room practical and useful in all types of weather and for all members of the family.
