Get organized by installing shelves in your linen closet.
Installing shelves can make a messy linen closet a model of organization. Although you can install a variety of shelving systems in your linen closet, one of the simplest and most basic is a wall-mounted system with a hanger bar. Wall-mounted shelving organization systems feature shelves, but they also typically offer other organizational elements, such as cabinets, baskets on tracks, or short bars for hanging tablecloths or other linens. Instructions
1. Remove everything from the inside of the closet. Remove all old shelves and bars from the closet. The manner in which you remove old shelves and bars will depend on how the shelves were initially installed.
2. Remove any screws or nails from the walls. Fill the holes from the screws with spackle using a putty knife. Let the spackle dry completely overnight. Sand the spackle surface smooth. Apply a new coat of paint throughout the entire closet. Let the paint dry.
3. Locate the top plate, which is a horizontal 2-by-4 found at the top of standard walls. You can typically use a stud finder to find the top plate. Draw a straight line across the wall using a pencil and a straightedge or level to mark the position of the top plate.
4. Place the hanger bar against the wall at the line. Use a drill to screw the hanger bar to the wall. Install a screw in every screw hole. The hanger bar should cover the entire length of the linen closet.
5. Hang the first shelf standard on the hanger bar. Use a drill to screw the standard into the hanger bar at the top, once it's where you want it. Insert a screw in the bottom screw hole of the standard. Screw it into place. Secure the rest of the shelf standard by drilling additional screws into the remaining holes.
6. Repeat the process to install additional shelf standards where needed.
7. Slip the brackets into the appropriate slots on each shelf standard. Push down on the bracket lightly to make sure it's secure. Place the shelf across the brackets.
