Make A Sliding Shelf

The kitchen is the ideal place to install a sliding shelf

A sliding shelf can add personality and uniqueness to any room. A sliding shelf is convenient for larger items or for storage purposes. It can also help keep storage cupboards better organized, as only so much space and storage is available on a sliding shelf. While sliding shelves can be bought ready for installation at local hardware or lumber stores, it is easy and cheap to build a sliding shelf from scratch.

Instructions

1. Measure the distance between the sides of the cabinet or cupboard where the sliding shelf will be installed. Measure the width of the cabinet or cupboard and the depth. Subtract ½ inch from the collected measurements.

2. Measure the ½ inch thick plywood using the measurements gathered in the previous step. Draw the lines straight using a ruler. Cut the piece out with the saw. Use sandpaper to smooth the edges .

3. Paint or stain the plywood shelf as desired. Let the shelf dry overnight before continuing.

4. Locate the sliding tracks. Separate the tracks, leaving the base and the sliding component apart.

5. Mark in the cabinet or cupboard where the sliding shelf will be installed. Use the pencil to mark small lines. When done, install the base of the sliding tracks on each side of the cabinet or cupboard. They should be directly opposite from one another when done. Secure the bases using screws and the screwdriver.

6. Place the plywood sliding shelf in the cabinet or cupboard, so it lines up with the tracks just installed. Use a pencil to make marks, indicating where the tracks begin and end on the shelf itself. Depending on the cabinet or cupboard structure, these marks may be best underneath the shelf. However, the sliding tracks may be better installed on the sides of the plywood cupboard. Decide what is best for the shelving unit. When done, remove the shelf from the cabinet or cupboard and turn it upside down.

7. Find the markings and line the other sliding components up against these marks. When even, attach these sliding tracks to the shelf itself, using screws and a screwdriver.

8. Slide the shelf into the base sliding tracks by holding the shelf at an angle. Once installed, test the shelf by pulling it in and out a few times. The shelf is now ready for use.
