Walk In Closet Shelving Ideas

Shelving helps keeps walk-in closets organized.

Walk-in closets provide plenty of space to organize and store personal belongings. They are also a selling point for a home. Dallas area Realtor Lydia Player says master suites that include walk-in closets add value to the home and make it more appealing to buyers. "Buyers are seeking master bedroom retreats that include a lounging area, walk-in closets and a luxurious bathroom," she says on her website. Installing proper shelving maximizes the appeal of the space and keeps items organized. Does this Spark an idea?

Segments

Segment the walk-in closet space with shelves to create a variety of cubbyholes and shelving at different heights. Segments come in varying sizes and are a good option for storing shoes, hats, sweaters or other items that do not often hang. Fill in empty spaces and make good use of segments by installing shelving modular units and dividers found in various sizes.

Bottom Shelving

Add bottom shelving to the walk-in closet to create space for storing seasonal clothes or items that do not get used often. Bins or baskets serve as shelving options for the bottom of the closet. Baskets keep items organized and can be used to store miscellaneous items as well, such as socks, underwear, hats and scarves.

Top Shelving

Like bottom shelving, top shelving stores and organizes items that are only used once in a while. Blankets, sheets and pillows can all be placed in the top shelving space. The shelves should be about 1 foot from the ceiling so you can access the items easier.

Shoe Shelving

Installing a designated shelving area for shoes creates an organized walk-in space. Shoe shelving can take up as much or as little space as you want, depending on the number of shoes. Categorize shoes by style for easy access. Top or bottom shelving is best for tall boots.

Organize

Divide clothing items by category to help keep the closet organized and functional. Shirts, sweaters, jackets, skirts, dresses and slacks are all category options. This also creates an inviting environment to get dressed in.

Hamper

A hamper is an essential piece for any walk-in closet. A clothes hamper will keep dirty clothes from being tossed on the closet floor to keep the closet clean.
