Incorporate The '60s And '70s In A Wardrobe

Style choices of the 1960s and 1970s were an expression of independence.

From micro-minis and disco glam to ripped jeans and the birth of punk, the 1960s and 1970s formed a trendsetting period that has a lasting influence. Fashion is continually changing, and although with each era there is a look that defines the culture of the moment, many of the styles from decades past are reincarnated time and time again. No matter what the current trend is, however, there are always ways to incorporate retro styles into modern pieces to create a personal look that is fun and unique. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Add retro accessories to your wardrobe. The '60s and '70s were famous for big, chunky jewelry and geometric shapes. Make a statement by adding large hoop earrings or bracelets made or adorned with natural elements such as wood or beads. Headbands and scarves are also popular staples of the time and are a worthwhile contribution to a retro look.

2. Enhance your wardrobe with varying skirt lengths. While the '60s saw the rise of hemlines, the '70s were more versatile in the length and types of skirts worn by women. Many of the skirts from that period can easily be worn today to add a retro feel to a modern closet. Pick skirts that are long and flowing to mimic the popular hippie look or add miniskirts and textured tights.

3. Incorporate individual articles of clothing that are distinctively '60s or '70s when wearing modern fashion. Try blending a tie-dyed top from the '70s with a pair of jeans or go for a retro punk look by wearing ripped jeans with a current top.

4. Choose modern takes on retro style. A subtle way to incorporate retro style is to buy clothing that is inspired by the '60s and '70s but made with a modern aesthetic. Many of the latest fashions borrow heavily from trends that were first made popular in these time periods. Modern flare pants, for example, are an updated version of the flare-leg trousers of the '70s but are significantly less dramatic.

5. Shop for classic retro pieces. Retro clothing and second-hand stores offer a wide selection of retro fashions. Buy pieces that are timeless in their appeal yet remain true to their respective time periods. Although many of the fashion choices of the time were over the top in terms of color, fabric and print, there are just as many subtle choices. Clothing such as halter tops, maxi dresses, or jumpsuits make good additions to a wardrobe and can be toned down with more modern accessories and individual pieces.
