Home Office Supply Storage Ideas

Use glass jars to help you store and organize a home office.

Organizing the home office can be a challenge. With a flow of things going in and out and things moving about, keeping items where they belong and where you can easily find them is a must to a successful home office. With a couple storage ideas, you can convert your space to a comfortable, organized and well-functioning home office. Does this Spark an idea?

Small Storage Containers

Place clean glass containers, such as jam jars, on top of your desk to store small office supplies like paper clips, rubber bands and stamps. Since they're clear, you can easily see what's inside. You can also use other types of containers that accent your home decor, such as white egg cups or blue glassware. You can also secure the lids of screw-top glass jars underneath a shelf, and simply screw and unscrew the jars on and off as you use them.

Other Container Ideas

Secure wall-mount mail slots for offices or secure old flip-top lunch boxes to a wall to sort mail and other incoming items in your office space. Use tiered baskets that take up little desk or floor space, but offer a lot of storage. Mount a shower organizer on a wall. It has small shelves for small items like envelopes and stamps. Some even have hooks at the bottom where you can hang scissors, keys and other miscellaneous items. Use photo storage boxes or clear plastic containers to store items on wall shelves or on a bookcase or baker's rack. Clearly label everything so you know what's inside.

Slat Board

Install a slat board on one wall or above the desk. You can then easily insert shelving, wire racks and file racks that fit into the slats and move them around as needed. Choose a bold color or style for some of the accessories and storage items, such as navy storage boxes, wicker baskets and decorative items, to create an attractive but organized area.

Dividing Drawer Trays

Desk dividers are divided trays that help you organize a drawer, separating items such as pencils from tape dispensers and extra staple boxes. Sock dividers for a dresser work well also and might be a cheaper option. For larger drawers where you can't find a divider that fits, buy plastic storage containers of varying sizes and organize items such as work tools, printer paper and old cords and cables.

Filing Cabinet

Keep file folders in alphabetical order, and leave room in each drawer for growth. Keep a list on the outside of the cabinet of what files you have on the inside. This way, you can scan the list before rummaging through the entire file cabinet. If you have a small office space, buy a filing cabinet that fits under your desk on the side if possible.
