Shoe Organization Ideas

There are many ways to keep your shoes organized and easily accessible.

Shoes are not only functional, but also fun. Many people enjoy having a variety of them for different occasions. You wear different pairs of shoes for work, play and around the house. You can easily keep shoes organized and out of the way, yet have them accessible to you. Does this Spark an idea?

Sorting by Color

One way to organize your shoe collection is by color. Begin with your black shoes, and place them in an organizer of your choosing. Then, move to the lighter shades to end up with white shoes on the far end. Keep coordinating colors such as reds and browns near one another in your organizer. Arranging your shoes by color is not only a visually appealing method of storage, it also helps you quickly find the pair to match your outfit.

Organizing by Season

You likely do not wear each pair of shoes every season of the year. Create more space in your closet for shoes that you are wearing at this time. In the summer, place winter boots in storage in your garage or under the bed. Store them in an airtight container to keep out dust and bugs. Keeping out only the shoes you are currently wearing allows you to find the perfect pair quickly on busy mornings.

Pre-Made Shoe Organizers

You can organize your shoes using a variety of purchased shoe organizers. Your local hardware or organization store has a number of styles to offer. You can choose from wire shelves or baskets that require installation in your bedroom closet or mud room area. If you place these low to the ground, and vary the height of each shelf, you can accommodate various styles of shoes such as boots and flats. If you prefer, you can purchase a canvas organizer that you hang from a closet bar. Organize your shoes in each compartment by color or style. Be careful not to put too many heavy shoes in the canvas organizer or the weight may pull down your closet bar.

Decorative Shoe Organization

There is no reason that shoe organization has to be an eyesore. You can creatively organize and store your shoes in your closet or mudroom. Instead of throwing out the shoe box, cover the bottom portion of the box with decorative paper that matches your home decor. Purchase this paper at your local hobby or party store. Wrap the box the same way you would a gift package, and secure the paper with glue or tape. If you wish, line the inside of the box with felt to protect your shoes. Leave the box open, and throw away the box top or wrap it in the same fashion you did the bottom portion. Place the boxes on a shelf in your closet, or leave them out by your entry door.
