Do It Yourself Organize

Hang your clothing by color in your closet for faster viewing of outfit options.

Clutter has a tendency to affect and reflect your state of mind. A disorganized mess not only makes your home undesirable to look at, it can also lead to absentmindedness and stress caused by internalizing the chaotic disorder that you see. Professional organizer Regina Leeds, author of "One Year to an Organized Life," states that clutter can be a mark of low self-esteem or an inability to make decisions. The bedroom is often the easiest room to clutter. Clothing, linens, jewelry, makeup, shoes and other items generally live in the bedroom, and without proper organization they can take over your sleeping space. According to Leeds, it can be torture to live in cluttered chaos, but luckily there are organizational methods that can bring you peace of mind. Does this Spark an idea?

1. Purchase clothing hangers, and hang as much clothing as you can in your closet. Depending on your closet space, you may also need a dresser or shelves to store garments such as folded sweaters and pants. After you've hung most of your clothing, organize your garments by color, starting with red on the left and following the color spectrum to purple on the right. Do the same with any folded clothing in your dresser or on your shelves. This allows easier access than wading through unorganized piles of clothing on a chair or the floor, and it helps you make faster outfit decisions because you can quickly find your clothing by color.

2. Purchase two plastic or soft-sided bins, and fill one with socks and the other with underwear. Although lids aren't imperative, they are good for keeping dust out. Store these two bins either in your closet or on your set of shelves to allow easy organization and access of undergarments.

3. If you own a lot of makeup and it's cluttering your vanity's surface, find a few old shoe boxes and organize by makeup type. For example, fill one box with all your bottles of nail polish. Label the box with a pen so you know exactly what's inside when the lid is on. Fill another shoe box with lipstick, another with eye shadow, and so on. Mark each box accordingly, and neatly stack them near your vanity or space where you apply your cosmetics every day. To organize your makeup brushes, fill a drinking glass with all your makeup tools, brush side up.

4. Organize your jewelry. Purchase a large cork board and fasten it to the wall near the space where you apply your makeup. Hang your necklaces in a neat row across the cork board on thumbtacks. Directly above your necklaces, hang all of your earrings on thumbtacks. Displaying your necklaces, earrings and bracelets in this way helps you quickly assess your options when putting together an outfit.

5. Organize your shoes. If you do not have shoe boxes, purchase an over-the-door shoe rack and hang your shoes in pairs on the back of your door. If you prefer a more hidden rack in your closet, purchase one that can hang from your closet's clothing rod or one that is freestanding and can be put on the closet floor. Arrange your shoes first by heel height, from flat on the left to highest heels on the right. Then arrange by color, either from left to right or from top to bottom.
