Size A Closet

The size of your closet dictates how large shelves can be.

A closet is generally a small, empty space used for storage. The downfall of the open closet design is a lack of organization. You can add racks to a closet where you can hang clothes, and a set of shelves greatly increases storage space. There are even prefabricated storage units designed specifically to fit into certain sizes of closet. Before you can build or install any of these organizational systems determine the size of the closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Step into the closet. Stretch the blade of a tape measure across the width of the closet. Keep the blade of the tape measure level and take note of the reading.

2. Measure the depth of the closet by measuring one of the side walls. Measure from drywall to drywall inside the closet, being careful to avoid door trim. Take note of the depth.

3. Check the height of the closet by measuring from the floor to the ceiling. Avoid any shelving or other obstructions inside the closet while taking this measurement. Take note of the height.

4. Multiply the width of the closet by the depth of the closet to get the square footage. Multiply the square footage by the height of the closet to get the interior volume. This is the size of the closet.
