What Are Cell Walls Made Up Of

Although the composition and organization of cell walls vary depending on the plant, cell walls contain strong, thick, rigid materials with a function analogous to the skeletal structure of animals.


Molecular Structure


The components of cell walls exist in complex molecular form. While the principle is the same for all plants, the chemistry of the molecules for each plant is different.


Building Materials


Most commonly, cell walls contain four carbon-based structural materials. Cellulose is a tubular-shaped molecule; glycans form narrower tubes that link the cellulose fibers together. A matrix of pectin surrounds the cellulose and glycan. Lignin forms in the spaces between the other components.


Function


Each of the materials in the cell wall has a different function. They bind together to provide strength, rigidity, protection, resistance to compression and the ability to hold the plant's form. They transport nutrients, waterproof the plant and form channels to move fluids within the plant.
