Tutorial On Hanging Closet Sliding Doors

Protect your clothes from dust and fading by installing closet doors.

Dress up your bedroom or guest closet with new sliding closet doors. Mirrored sliding doors in a bedroom make the room appear more spacious and reflect light. During daylight hours, the mirrored doors reflect sunlight to give the room a bright, airy feeling. At night, the doors will reflect candles or soft lamplight. Closet doors are available in a wide choice of finishes and styles. Choose your track for the sliding doors based on the weight of the doors. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Sand and apply varnish or paint to unfinished sliding closet doors before installing. Finishing the doors is easier and the finish is less apt to run if applied with the doors on a flat surface.

2. Measure the width of the closet opening at the top and bottom. Cut the top track to the measurement of the top of the closet opening. If using a bottom track cut to the measurement at the floor level of the closet. Hold the top track in place and mark the screw holes. The screw holes are pre-drilled in purchased track. Drill pilot holes into the wood at the top of the closet opening. Use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the diameter of the screws. Place the screws through the holes in the track and tighten with a screwdriver or drill driver.

3. Attach the roller assemblies to the top of the doors on the backside, 2-½ inches from the door edges. Mark the screw holes and drill pilot holes to avoid splintering the door. Tighten the screws, but do not over-torque.

4. Hold the closet doors with the bottom angled in toward the closet to engage the rollers into the track. Allow the doors to hang naturally. If there is gaping at the sides of the doors where they meet the framework, turn the adjustment screws on the back of the roller assembly until the doors meet the wall correctly.

5. Lay the bottom track on the floor underneath the doors and mark the screw holes. Move the doors to one side of the closet, mark the track holes, and then slide to the opposite side, and mark the other side. Drill pilot holes and install the screws. Slide the doors back and forth to check for smooth operation and make any necessary adjustments to the roller assemblies.
