Build Cabinet With Sliding Glass Doors

Building a 4-foot-wide by 6-foot-tall cabinet with two sliding glass doors to display antiques, collectibles or other items is a fairly simple task and can be less expensive than buying one. All you need is a few carpentry tools, plywood, wood stain or paint, hardware and two precut glass doors. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Cutting the Pieces

1. Measure a 4-foot by 6-foot back piece for the cabinet on a sheet of plywood. Cut it out with the circular saw.

2. Cut two 1-foot by 4-foot pieces of plywood. These are the top and bottom pieces of the cabinet.

3. Cut two pieces of plywood that are 1 foot by 5 foot 10 1/2-inches. These will be the sides.

4. Determine the number of shelves you want inside the cabinet and cut them out. A shelf is 11 inches by 3 foot 10 1/2-inches.

5. Sand any rough edges off the cut pieces with the sander. Apply wood stain or paint and allow to dry.

6. Have a local glass cut two pieces of 1/4-inch thick glass for the doors. Each door should be 2 foot wide and 5 foot 10 1/4 inches tall. Have all edges smoothed and finished.

Assembling the Cabinet

7. Construct the 4-foot by 6-foot outer frame for the cabinet. Lay the two 4-foot pieces on edge parallel to each other 6 feet apart. Insert the side pieces between them, one on each side, completing the frame. Drive four screws along each end of the top and bottom into the sides and fasten them together.

8. Align the back piece over the frame and attach it. Drive a screw every 6 inches down through it all the way around into the four sides of the frame.

9. Stand the completed portion of the cabinet up on a 4-foot side and install the shelves where you want them. Drive three screws through each side of the cabinet along the ends of every shelf.

10. Cut two 3-foot 10 1/2-inch pieces of track for the doors. Install a track along the front of the top of the cabinet on the underside with the necessary hardware. Sit the other track on the bottom while you insert the glass doors into the tracks. Slide the bottom track so the doors are vertical and attach it to the bottom of the cabinet.
