A mudroom is a must have for those who are constantly running in and out of the house, especially if you live in a location with severe weather. You'll need a room to store your coats, jackets, hats, gloves, shoes, umbrella and all your other outdoor attire. Designing your own mudroom is a great way to make sure you have all the necessary elements to keeping it clean and useful. With a little help, you'll have your own workable mudroom in no time. 1. Think about the basics of your mudroom, especially where it's going to be. Start with a sketch. How large is the room that you are going to use for it, and are you going to use the entire room? Find the dimensions of the space you will be using.
2. Think about what you will be using the room for. Will it be for snow clothes, extra coats or sports equipment? How many people will be using it? Will people always come in through the mudroom?
3. Using the dimensions of the room, begin to sketch out a reasonable draft of what you want your mudroom to look like. Mudrooms do not necessarily need to be as comfortable as they are useful. Make sure you have a rack or bin for shoes. If there is already a closet in the room you're using, do not worry about where the clothing with go. If not, consider purchasing hooks to put on the walls, or buy a unit to assemble for extra storage. You can also use a coat rack.
4. Plan for extra tubs and bins to put your accessories into. For example, backpacks, snow gear (mittens, earmuffs, scarves) or other clothing pieces need to have a place to be kept safe and warm. Any wet items need to be dried out before being stored, so also consider a drying rack. For extra storage space without taking room from the floor, use shelves.
5. Use any extra space for seating so you can sit while you dress yourself before going outside. Decide whether or not you would like a rug in you mudroom. If you would like one so people do not slip when they come in from being outside wet, keep in mind you will have to clean the rug regularly.
