Ideas For Organizing Kids' Stuff

Providing opportunities for organization makes it easier for your child to visualize it.

Clutter and mess in kids' rooms seems like a fact of life. No matter how many times you tell kids to straighten their room, they find ways to cut corners and shove their toys and clothes out of sight. While you cannot prevent clutter altogether, you can organize closets and bedrooms to create an environment that is conducive to cleanliness, which may encourage your child to keep his things organized. Does this Spark an idea?

Clothing

When organizing clothing, the first step is getting rid of clothes that don't fit, aren't in season, or are ripped or torn. Keeping a winter coat in a closet during the summer will reduce the space that you have for seasonally-appropriate clothes. Try using bins for off-season clothes and keep them in another room or in the top of the closet.

Keep a clothing hamper in your child's room; this will prevent your child from throwing his dirty clothes on the floor.

Toys

Kids' rooms are often littered with toys and games. Having an easily accessible container to store toys will make organizing a room easier. The container -- a bin or chest of some sort -- should be large enough to hold all of your child's toys. If it has a lid, ensure that it is easily opened and closed, so that your child can do it herself. Having a single location for toys makes it easier for kids to clean up the room themselves, and helps the room remain organized.

Books

You can put a bookcase in your child's room to make it easier to organize his books and magazines. Make sure that there are shelves that are tall enough to fit tall books and magazines, so that nothing has to lie down on the shelves; if some of the books are lying and others are standing, your child may lie all books down instead of taking the time to stand them up.

Shoes

Having an established location for shoes, whether it's in a hall closet or under the bed, helps your child develop organizational habits. You can get a hanging rack for the back of the bedroom or closet door, or have your child line them up under her bed. The rack is beneficial because your child will be more likely to put both shoes up together, making her less likely to lose individual shoes.
