Plan Closet Space

Try all your clothes on. If it doesn't fit, throw it out.

No matter how much closet space you have, it always gets cluttered with clothes you don't wear any more. Bad closet organization and a tendency to hoard can make it difficult to find space for new clothes. It also makes items you already have hard to find and easily forgotten. This means you end up buying more clothes than you actually need.

Spend a few hours organizing your closet space and a few dollars on some simply installed closet storage aids and you will save time in the long run by having your clothes and accessories easily to hand. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Clear out your closet

1. Remove everything from your closet and lay it out on your bed and bedroom floor.

2. Go through it all, sorting the clothes into "keep" and "go" piles. If you haven't worn something in the last year, you're unlikely to wear it again. Also throw out any clothes that need mending--of you haven't done it by now, you probably never will. Clothes that don't fit should be immediately ousted.

3. Repeat step 2 with your shoes, handbags and accessories.

4. Split the "keep" items into winter-wear and summer-wear. Store out-of-season clothes in boxes on top of your closet or under your bed. Have clothes you keep for sentimental reasons, like wedding dresses, cleaned and packed in acid-free container by a dry cleaner for storage in the attic or garage.

You have now severely cut down on the items you need space for.

Organize your closet

5. Hang a shoe rack on the back of your closet door. One with plastic pockets can be used to store accessories, too.

6. Stick-on utility hooks and coat racks that are easily screwed into place make great places to hang hats, belts and scarves.

7. Put a low-height shelving unit into your closet. This can be adjusted for your storage needs and are handy for folded jeans, T-shirts and light sweaters.

8. Fill unused floor space with see-through plastic storage boxes. Handbags and folded thicker sweaters can be kept in these so you see the times without opening all the boxes.

9. Hang the rest of your clothes on wooden or plastic hangers; wire hangers are more likely to damage your clothes. Arrange them in order of type of clothing and then, within those categories, by color. To make the most of the railing space available, use hangers designed for multiple items.
