Organized clothes
When you're dealing with a small closet, you need to think about its purpose and what kinds of things you want to store there. Then you can determine maximize your storage space. There are many ways to use all of the available space; you just need a little creativity and the right supplies. Does this Spark an idea?
The Purpose of Your Closet
The first step is to determine what you want to put in the closet. If you want to put clothes and shoes in it, you need different things than if you're storing towels and linens or other miscellaneous items.
Think about the size of your items and how much space they will use. Then visualize any extra space that may be available. Extra space will usually appear above or below the main items in your closet.
Determine What Organization Will Work Best
To hang clothing, you definitely need a clothes bar. If you are hanging something short such as shirts or pants, see if you can fit two bars in the closet, one bar up higher and the other about half way down. Purchase multiple item hangers. Multiple pants hangers will hold four to five pairs of pants each, saving valuable closet space. There are hangers just for multiple ties, too,.
You can use extra space at the bottom of your closet by installing a shelf and putting storage bins above and below it. If you don't have that much room, put the bins on the floor. The same for space above hanging bars; install a shelf and use bins. Store out-of-season items in these bins.
Hang a shoe storage rack over the door. Install hooks for bags, backpacks, purses or scarves either on the door or on an unused wall.
To put linens or folded clothes in your closet, purchase a shelving system or make one yourself. If you have the option, use adjustable shelves. Space the shelves so that they are not overloaded. Consider putting vertical dividers on the shelves to help them stay neater and more organized. You can also install cubes instead of shelves; it would work the same way as vertical dividers.
Stay Organized
When you have your storage systems in place, organize your items. Put like things together. For instance, put all your shirts together, then further organize them by sleeve length. The more diligent you are about keeping your closet organized, the better use you will get out of your small closet.
Make use of other unused space in your home. You can buy special storage bins that go under the bed and store items there. It's a great way to keep your home organized and clutter free.
