Wardrobe Stylist Tips

A wardrobe stylist needs to always be aware of the materials available.

A wardrobe stylist assists others in creating new looks, maintaining style habits and ensuring that clients appear put-together, organized and fashionable. Tips and tricks can help a wardrobe stylist perform duties with greater ease. Tools are available to facilitate styling others. Does this Spark an idea?

Data Sheet

Stay in tune with the wants, needs and tastes of your clients. To help retain and recall this information, use a log book to keep extensive notes about each client. Include detailed physical information, such as the client's current height, weight hair color and cut. Also note her current clothing, shoe, hat, scarf and glove sizes. In a more detailed data sheet, include information on which colors and styles she favors and dislikes. For example, you may have a client who prefers A-line dresses compared to sheath styles. Maintain a book for each client with dated entries to help keep all information current, private and readily available.

Digital Photos of Outfits and Looks

Every time you assist in getting your client dressed or ready for an event, engagement or photo shoot, take a few digital photos of the final look. Include photos of both sides and the front and back of the outfit, with all included cosmetics and accessories. Add the photos to your running log for the client. Note the date on the back of each picture and make a comment or two about what the client liked and disliked.

Catalog of Choices

A catalog of items you have ready to go makes choices easier. Using a tablet computer, smart phone or even a laptop makes presenting this information fast and effective. Take digital photos of all clothing, accessories, jewelry and shoes. Use the tagging or caption function available on a photo editing software program to assign tag words to each photo. The easiest method is to tag and label photos by color, sticking with one color as the label. You then need to organize all pictures in to folders based on color. With the database in your hand you can get input from your client about what is available and what items are potential candidates for his next outfit.

Video Recorder

As a wardrobe stylist, you want to make sure that your client is happy with how the total look works before stepping outside. You could record the person walking, sitting, standing and even dancing in the final outfit, then play the recording to your client to see if they are happy with how the outfit fits, flows and feels. A dress or outfit may look stunning in the seated position, but prove too difficult to walk or maneuver around in. This is also a good way to check for any flaws, loose strings, spots, stains or tears.
