1. Make an overall odor absorber. Purchase inexpensive activated charcoal chunks at garden stores and put a couple of cups in a mesh or cheesecloth bag. Close the bag, set it in a plastic bowl, and tuck it into your closet. Odors should be gone by the next day. Replace once a year.
2. Trade mothballs for cedar. Fill a mesh or cheese cloth bag with cedar chips (found at pet stores), and hang in the closet. The mountain fresh scent eliminates moths and frees you from the scent of mothballs. An alternative is putting a chunk of cedar wood on the floor or on a shelf. This should last indefinitely.
3. Remove off-odors from too much moisture. Fill a cheese cloth bag with two cups of rock salt, or several pieces of white chalk and hang in the closet to absorb moisture. Replace when they appear damp.
4. Add a natural scent to your closet. Recycle a plastic food tub and punch a lot of holes in the lid. Soak cotton balls with real essential oils, fill the tub with them, and keep this in the back of the closet. Possible essential oils include lavender, cedar and pine. Replace every few weeks.
5. Add a "fresh laundry" scent to your closet. If you like the scent of spray-on fresheners such as Febreeze, or like the scent of clothes after you've used your favorite brand of dryer sheets, either replace the essential oils in step 4 with cotton balls soaked in the spray-on freshener, or place dryer sheets in various places such as between folded clothes or staple them onto hangers before hanging clothes. This is a great way to make a closet smell good and keep unwanted bugs away as well.
6. Get serious with odors from pets. If pets have made your closet a favorite place to eliminate, regurgitate, or stockpile dead mice -- after cleaning you may need to spray the area with a product such as Zero Odor, or another product that eliminates odors naturally with beneficial bacteria or an organic treatment of the odor causing molecules. The effect lasts forever unless the cause (pets) return and reintroduce a new cause of odor. For the small amount needed to make a closet smell good again, you should be able to get what you need for less than $10.
7. Eliminate shoe odor to make a closet smell good. Sometimes, it's the shoes that cause most of the problem. Get into the habit of wiping the insides after each wearing with a natural towelette such as a face, hand or baby wipe, which can sometimes even eliminate odor already soaked into the shoe over time, or spray them with Febreeze or sprinkle in baking powder after each use (tap out the powder before wearing them again).
