A tall wardrobe is ideal for storing wedding gowns and other formal wear.
Tall wardrobe cabinets are extremely useful for storing large or long clothing such as heavy winter coats, formal evening wear and costumes. Storing such materials in a way that allows them to be fully suspended rather than crumpled at the bottom increases the lifespan of these garments by preventing wear and tear to their bottom portions. Building these cabinets requires only basic materials and basic tools, and they can easily be built in an afternoon and finished over a weekend. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Set out two 3/4-by-24-by-72-inch boards to be the side boards of the wardrobe. Have assistants hold the boards parallel to each other on their longest, thinnest sides, about 2 feet apart. Set a 1-by-24-by-24-inch board against one end of the side boards to be the top board of the wardrobe. Use a drill and drill bit to make holes every 6 inches through the top board and into each of the side boards. Attach them together with 2-inch wood screws drilled through the holes.
2. Repeat on the other end of the side boards to add a 1-by-24-by-24-inch bottom board.
3. Lay a 3/4-by-24-by-73-inch board on the frame and drill holes every 12 inches through it and into the frame boards underneath. Attach 2-inch wood screws in each hole to secure this rear board.
4. Flip the frame over and set another 3/4-by-24-by-73-inch board on top of the frame to be the door. Set four side-mount cabinet hinges between the door and the wardrobe, evenly spaced about a foot from each other and the top and bottom. Mark the screw holes on the door and side board of the wardrobe, lifting the door slightly if necessary. Drill holes in each marking and attach the hinges with 1/2-inch wood screws.
5. Set a knob on the outside of the wardrobe and determine the desired location. Mark the spot and drill a hole through the door for the bolt. Set the knob bolt through the hole and tighten the nut on it on the other side with a wrench.
6. Position two magnetic two-part latches on the opening side of the door between the door and side board. Mark the location of their screw holes on the door and the side board. Drill out the holes and attach the latches with 1/2-inch wood screws.
7. Drill a 1-inch hole in the center of two 1-by-3-by-24-inch boards. Place one on each end of a 22 1/2-inch dowel with a 1 inch diameter. Set the boards inside the wardrobe at the desired clothes-hanging height and drill four holes through the outside of the side boards and into each of these dowel support boards. Tighten 1 1/2-inch screws through the outside of the side boards and into the dowel support boards.
