Make your garage work for you.
Stuff accumulates quickly, so it is a good idea to get your garage set up for storage before it becomes a cluttered mess. Plenty of affordable, easy to set up storage options are available. Good garage storage methods will hold a lot without taking up large amounts of space. Stored items should be easily accessible and out of your car's way. Does this Spark an idea?
Storage Tubs
Ordinary shelves aren't so great for storage because things pile up, become hard to find or are prone to falling off the shelves. Things can be better organized if you line the shelves with storage tubs, which come in all shapes and sizes. Label the front of the tubs with permanent marker so you can easily find whatever you are looking for. Storage tubs also have lids, which can help prevent damage to stored items.
Pegboard and Hooks
There are always those tools that you use all of the time, and it makes more sense to have those tools easily accessible instead of stored in the toolbox. A pegboard with hooks can store tools in the garage so they are out of the way but accessible when needed. Different pegboard hooks are available at hardware stores and can be used to hang everything from hammers to garden shears. Other items besides tools can also be hung on a pegboard, including brooms, rakes and coils of extension cords.
Storage Loft
Ceiling joists in a garage are usually left open. If there is enough space above the joists, under the rafters, a couple of the joists can be lined with a piece of plywood to create a kind of loft or attic-type storage space. This space can be used for storing those items you don't need too often, such as spare luggage, furniture items not being used and old toys. When you do need something from up there, simply use a ladder. Safety precautions should be taken when adding a storage loft. The plywood should be thick enough to hold the weight of what is being stored and it should not be walked on once installed.
