Reuse Furniture To Build Closets

Old furniture can be used to build closet organizers.

Reusing old furniture, such as cabinets, doors and bookcases, is an excellent way to provide customized and functional organization to your bedroom without incurring any extra cost. Providing that you have ample reusable furniture to complete the project, the only cost for completion is wood screws. Re-staining or repainting all of the pieces in this type of large reused furniture installation gives it a unified and cohesive appearance and can help protect it in the long run. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Find and clearly label all of the studs in the wall where the closet will be installed. Mark both sides of each stud to get a clear picture of the size of the wood supports hidden in the wall.

2. Measure the dimensions of the closet area where the furniture pieces will be installed. Transfer these measurements to a piece of paper and plan out the best locations for the various elements by positioning the sections to scale for a clearer installation. Place cabinets at eye level for the most convenient arrangement to hang clothes. Plan to put a cabinet on either end of the closet and run an old railing between them to make the main clothes hanger. Put bookcase sections at the top and bottom of the closet to make use of the space. Position the drawer sections at the bottom of the closet.

3. Prepare the furniture to be attached to the wall by cutting desks into component pieces, such as drawer sections and a desktop. Remove brackets from railings and remove any unnecessary hardware from the components.

4. Position each piece of furniture against the wall in the designated area with the bottom pieces first. Set a carpenter's level against the furniture to make sure it is straight then drill through the rear board of the furniture into the studs with holes spaced every 6 inches. Attach objects with no rear boards, such as shelves, by positioning 3-inch L-brackets underneath the shelves and against the shelves and the brackets. Attach the brackets to the wall with 3-inch wood screws and to the shelves with 3/4-inch wood screws.

5. Continue to attach the rest of the furniture in the same manner and work up the closet wall as you go.

6. Drill holes that are the same diameter as an old railing into the side boards of a cabinet then slide a cabinet over each end of the railing. Glue the railing in place then attach the cabinets to the wall with the same attachment method.
