Closet Ideas For Old Homes

Closets in old homes often lack space.

Closets in old homes are typically not as large as closets in newer homes. Make use of every inch of available space by getting organized and taking advantage of products designed to add storage. Does this Spark an idea?

Quick Fix

Install a second horizontal bar on which clothing can hang. Space the bars far enough apart to accommodate shirts, pants and shirts. Add a drawer system that can sit on the floor to hold items including gloves, hats, scarves, undergarments and socks. If the drawer system takes away space needed for shoes, add a compartment system that can hang on the back of the doors to hold shoes. Or, consider storing shoes in a compartmentalized box under the bed.

Closet System

A closet system is made up of a series of shelves, drawers and poles. Before installing a closet system, consider the items to be stored. If you have a lot of shoes, install ample storage for shoes. Determining the layout for the closet should begin from the bottom up. Items that you use daily should be held toward the bottom and middle of the closet system for easy access. Objects that are seasonal or not used often should be placed on higher shelves. Store items in decorative boxes. Consider labeling the boxes, or using clear plastic boxes that reveal the contents.

Custom Storage

Employing a professional woodworker or craftsman to create a customized closet is a slightly more expensive choice, but will yield a highly personalized closet. Custom closets can be made to include cubby holes and drawers in sizes to fit your specific items.
