Use baskets or containers you already have lying around the house to organize your closet.
Organizing your closet doesn't require a complete overhaul with a large budget to buy all of the new organizational products that are available. Completing your organizing project does require creativity and an open mind. The best way to organize your closet is in a way that works for you and your pocketbook.
Purge
Purging your closet of ill-fitting clothes, items you don't use or things you haven't seen in years is the first step in organizing your closet. Create three or four piles or sections to separate the items you remove from your closet, including "keep," "trash," "donate" and "sell." Sell all of the items and clothes you can to fund any purchases you might make for your organization project. Get rid of anything you haven't worn in over a year and throw away anything that's not salvageable, such as a T-shirt with holes in it.
Hooks
Screw small hooks into the walls or stick them to the walls on the sides and back of your closet. The hooks can hold scarves, belts, ties, handbags or other items that need a home where you can easily find them. Hooks aren't expensive or difficult to install. Avoid overloading the hooks with heavy items.
Shelves and Drawers
Repurpose any shelves or dressers that you have lying around the house. If you don't have any, visit thrift stores, flea markets or yard sales to find cheap ones that are in decent shape. Paint them to match if you want a cohesive look in the closet. Store shoes, bulky folded clothes and other items that you use on a somewhat regular basis on the shelves or in the drawers on the floor of the closet.
Boxes and Bins
Old shoe boxes, recycled plastic containers, bins, baskets or other containers can hold out-of-season clothes, linens or other items that you want to store in the closet. Stack these containers on top of the closet if they hold items you hardly need access to and on shelves or the floor if you use the items more frequently. Consider covering the boxes and containers with poster board or scrapbook paper. Decorate plain paper to make your closet more attractive. Label each box with large, neat letters or pictures to make it easier to find the items you need.
Hang It Up
Hang up the clothes that you wear frequently or should be hung up for practical reasons. Invest in hangers of the same size, style and color for a uniform look. Plastic hangers are cheaper than their wood counterparts and still look nicer than a bunch of mismatched hangers.
