Size A Bifold Door Opening

Sizing a bifold door opening is slightly different than measuring for a standard door. Bifold doors require room to fold as they are opened. They also require additional space for the track on which the bifold door slides during operation. Take the measurements of the opening before ordering your bifold door to ensure you get a proper size door for the opening. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the thickness of the door frame with a tape measure. Bifold doors hang directly to your door opening. Because drywall thickness can vary from standard wood trim thickness, you want to order doors thinner than the thickness of the wall.

2. Measure the top of the door opening between the left and right jambs. Measure the bottom of the opening between the jambs. Subtract 1 inch from the smaller measurement and write the measurement as the width of the opening. The 1-inch difference allows room for the bifold door to operate.

3. Take measurements of both door jambs from the floor to the top of each jamb. Subtract 3/4 inch from the smallest measurement and write the measurement for the height of the opening. The 3/4-inch difference is for the upper track of the bifold door.
