Decorating Ideas For Turning A Walkin Closet Into An Office

Convert an unused closet into your home office.

If you are short on space but need a dedicated office space in your home, consider converting a walk-in closet into your study. Having your office in a former closet allows you to tuck away your work space neatly and cleanly behind closed doors. Add shelving, office furniture and organizational furniture for a neatly organized study and working space. Does this Spark an idea?

Paint

Before you install any furniture in your converted closet, take a few hours to paint it. For an invigorating office, consider bright colors such as tangerines and yellows. For a calm, soothing feeling in your converted office, think about beiges, blues, greens or other earth-tones. Allow your paint to dry well before embarking upon the rest of your decorating.

Desk

Closets are most often small square or rectangular spaces. Install a desk along one or two walls to make the most effective use of the space. You can purchase an L-shaped desk and place it along the wall or fashion your own desk out of file cabinets with doors placed on top of them. For a custom look, paint your desk so that it complements your d cor. No matter what kind of desk you choose, ensure that you have plenty of drawers for your storage needs.

Shelving

Closets are small and don't have a lot of room for shelving units. Make use of the vertical space in your closet by installing vertical shelving above your desk and along the walls to use as both storage and as a display area. Display your items in small, attractive groupings, and use baskets or attractive boxes to hold small items that need to be stored.

Lighting

The overhead lighting installed in many walk-in closets is harsh, unattractive and uninspiring. Install your own desk lamps and floor lamps in your office in at least two corners to ensure that you have optimum illumination in your room. Select lamps that enhance your d cor, and use daylight-style light bulbs. Purchase lampshades that reflect your style.

Seating

If you have room, place a comfortable chair in a corner where you can snuggle up with a book and relax. Enhance the chair with throw pillows and a comfortable, lush blanket over the back. Invest in the most comfortable office chair you can afford. Consider slip-covering your office chair to complement your d cor.

Wall Art

Hang wall art among your vertical shelving on the wall to give your office a personal touch and to add personality and visual interest to your office. Groupings of framed photographs, framed posters and framed prints all work well as wall art on an office wall.
