1. Clear out everything in your closet from top to bottom, leaving bare shelves, clothes racks and an empty floor. This allows you to evaluate just how much space you have to take advantage of, as well as architecture, such as shelves or a high ceiling. Removing every item from you closet is the only way to see just how much stuff you've stuffed into your small closet, and therefore what you're willing to get rid of to get organized and create more space.
2. Sort the items that were in your closet into items that you wear on a regular basis, those you wear occasionally, and those you are willing to get rid of or donate. Check each group twice to make sure that you don't toss something you can't live without or that you keep something you never wear. Once you've decided which items to keep, separate them into like categories, such as shirts, pants, skirts, shoes and accessories, to make organizing them easier.
3. Replace the closet items you decide to keep in an organized fashion so you can find them later more easily, taking into account any dominant wardrobe pieces or large collections. By keeping like garments together, your closet will appear clutter-free. This amplifies the space. Take advantage of storage bins, over-the-door organizers and special accessory hangers to make the most of the space in your small closet.
