Storage Solutions For Laundry Rooms

Having everything at your fingertips will make laundry day a breeze. Many laundry rooms are small by design or serve a dual purpose, which makes the space seem smaller than it is. Staying organized and making the most of the space will not actually increase the area, but it can feel that way. Does this Spark an idea?

Closet Laundry

A closet-size laundry only has enough space on the floor to fit a washer and dryer. Open wire shelving is a good choice for storage. The open wires allow you to see when objects have been pushed to the back of the shelf. A quick peak from underneath will let you see any item that is hidden from view. ClosetMaid shelving can be purchased at home improvement centers and most centers will cut the shelf to your specifications. Mount this type of shelf with brackets to wall studs for a sturdy and rust-proof shelf. Be sure to leave clearance for washer lids that open from the top. Two rows of shelves will provide twice the space, but remember to allow enough clearance for your largest items.

Baskets made from wicker or plastic will help to keep smaller items sorted. Label each basket for quick reference, such as waxing and dusting supplies or stain removers. Baskets made from fabric come in a variety of colors that can be mixed or matched depending on color preference.

Mount your iron on the wall to save room on the shelf for other items.

Laundry Room

Wood or laminate cupboards that are installed above the washer and dryer will give a laundry room a finished look. Rooms that have space between the appliances and the wall can be filled with a storage chest. Storage chests are available in hard plastic or wicker and can be found at discount department stores of home improvement centers. These chests have deep drawers and wheels for easy movement.

An ironing board and iron can be mounted on the wall. A drop-down ironing board is also a nice feature for quick access. The board is mounted permanently to the wall and is easily released for use. Push and secure the board to the wall for permanent storage.

Attach a retractable clothes hanger for pressed items. Mount the hanger to the wall and swing the arm out while in use; swing the arm back against the wall when it is no longer needed.
