Wardrobe Storage Tips

Your wardrobe shouldn't be crammed into your closet.

If you enjoy shopping, fashion and new clothes, you may find it difficult to keep your wardrobe down to a manageable size. Even if you're not a clotheshorse, if you live in a small apartment or home without a lot of closet space, keeping your clothes from overflowing can still be a daunting task. Regardless of your situation, there exist simple solutions to keep your wardrobe put away in an organized fashion. Does this Spark an idea?

Seasonal Bins

There's really no need to crowd your closet with bulky sweaters, sweatshirts and heavy woolen socks when it's 80 degrees out. You can easily remedy this issue by keeping your summer and spring clothes separate from your winter and fall clothes. If you keep your cold weather clothes in flat large bins, no taller than 8 to 10 inches, you can easily slide them out from under your bed. They often come with small plastic wheels for ease of use. You'll free up a good amount of space in your closet and your cold weather clothes will be easily accessible. When the temperature changes, you can switch them with your warm weather clothes.

Another Rod

Adding another rod is a simple solution that can double the space of your closet. Simply detach the rod that is in your closet right now and move it so that it is high enough above the floor to hang a shirt on it without the shirt touching the floor. Attach another rod so that it is high enough above this rod so that a shirt hanging on it won't touch the clothes below it. You now have twice as much space to hang your clothes. Before you make this change in your closet, you should organize your clothes into two piles: clothes that you wear very often and clothes that you hardly ever wear. Put the clothes that you wear infrequently on the higher rod. Bear in mind that shorter individuals may need to purchase a step stool to reach the items on the higher rod.

Plastic Boxes

To store your folded shirts so that they are easily accessible yet don't take up too much room, purchase plastic boxes. Plastic boxes that stack on top of each other are a way to not use up too much space and to keep your shirts folded. The boxes should be clear plastic and can be stacked in your closet. A skinny drawer unit would also free up the space in your closet and accomplish the same thing.

Shoe Racks

You need to have some sort of apparatus for storing your shoes. Stacking shoes on top of each other in the shoe box not only takes up too much space, but doesn't allow you to see what you have and can damage your shoes. A freestanding shoe rack saves space if you have many pairs of shoes and an over-the-door shoe rack keeps floorspace clear and hides shoes out of site on the inside of your closet door or behind the bedroom door.
