Build A Pantry For Longterm Food Storage

A pantry is a great place to keep nonperishable food.

A pantry is one of the most useful things you can have in your home. It offers a place to keep food for long-term storage, which means you can buy things in bulk and save a lot of money. It also permits you to keep items you might not need every day out of the way and off your kitchen counters, reducing clutter significantly. Some people are fortunate enough to have an entire room designated as a pantry. Don't worry, though--you can build a pantry out of just about any small space. Any cabinet or closet will function well as a pantry for long-term food storage. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Building Your Pantry

1. Determine where you want to build your pantry. Any cabinet or closet will do, but it should be near your kitchen. After all, you need to have convenient access to the food and other items you're storing in the pantry. Choose a cabinet or closet that has a door, or at the very least an area that is not in full sunlight.

2. Use the 2-by-4s to build supports for your shelves. How many you make will be determined by the size of your pantry. The supports should run along both side walls and the rear wall. Use the drill and screws to mount them firmly in place. If you're installing several shelves, be sure to leave ample space between them so that your pantry has an open look and you'll be able to find items even at the backs of the shelves.

3. Cut the melamine board into shelf lengths based on the size of your cabinet or closet space. Position the boards onto the shelf supports, and use the drill and screws to hold them in place.

4. Cover each shelf with a length of rubber shelf liner material. This will keep your food items from sliding around, and also protect your shelves in case of spills.
