Design Closet Space

A well designed closet can make locating your best outfit quick and easy.

Cluttered and disorganized closets make finding the right outfit, accessory or pair of shoes for each day a difficult and annoying task. Poor design and inefficient use of the space leads to a disorganized closet. By taking the time to design and implement a closet organization system that fits your specific needs, you can turn even the smallest closet space into an organized area in which all of your clothes and accessories have their place. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the dimensions of the closet with a measuring tape. The experts at TLC Home say this will give you an idea of how much space you have to work with.

2. Group your wardrobe and any items that you need to store in the closet by length or type, such as short and long items or pants and shirts.

3. List the different storage methods available for your items, such as shelving, hanger rods and cubbyholes. Choose the best way to store each category of clothing or items. This will allow you to properly store your wardrobe.

4. Draw out the dimensions of the closet space on a piece of paper. Draw blocks to represent the amount of space you need for each category of your wardrobe. Long hanging items will require a larger vertical space than items that you prefer to store stored folded or stacked.

5. Add visibility. This Old House recommends adding racks to hold individual accessories, such as belts and ties, that you find difficult to see or choose from when stored in a drawer or hanging among your clothes.

6. Install a shelf at the very top or bottom of your closet to store occasional use and out-of-season items. This will keep the other storage areas of your closet free of clutter.

7. Purchase closet rods, shelving, baskets and other storage units. The experts at DoItYourself.com recommend purchasing a modular storage system, which typically includes a wide variety of storage units that all work together.
