Wardrobes can be too small to meet your needs.
If you must store your clothes in a wardrobe closet, you're probably yearning for more space. These units, even relatively large 48-inch-wide ones can be way too small to hold every item of clothing that you own. With the right kind of organization, though, you can make a wardrobe closet more serviceable. Spend some time planning how you want to arrange your clothing, and consider making a trip to the discount or home-improvement store to pick up storage items that suit your space and needs. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Lay out the items that need to go in your closet wardrobe and measure your closet. Go through your clothing and arrange to donate to charity any items that you no longer wear. Separate the remaining items into categories, such as dresses, slacks, shirts, shoes and accessories. Determine what can go into your closet and what will need to be stored elsewhere. Accessories, for example, could be kept in a nightstand.
2. Install an organizer kit in your wardrobe. Set aside one small section with a hanging rod at least 6 feet high for dresses or suits. The bigger section should have two rods, one for shirts and jackets, and the other for slacks and skirts.
3. Attach hooks to the back of the doors for hanging additional long items. Make sure those items aren't bulky enough to interfere with closing the doors.
4. Put a shelf above each rod. Organize sweaters and tops by type and color in boxes for quick access and neat storage. If you have room, make additional boxes for out-of-season or specialty items.
5. Buy a slanted shoe shelf for the bottom of the closet. Put it about 8 inches above the floor. These have a small ridge at the back to hold the heels so that you can easily see your shoes.
6. Affix battery-operated lights to the interior walls of your wardrobe closet. A light on each side of the closet will eliminate shadows and help you see what you have.
