It takes more than a hanger to organize a closet.
Closets are too useful for their own good--they're always too small, and you can always use more space than you have. Particularly frustrating can be old, smaller-than-average closets, which may seem so tiny that you have no idea use them efficiently. Organizing a closet takes more ingenuity than shoving all your belongings inside and squeezing the door shut, though. By organizing, planning and even furnishing your closet, you increase its usefulness and make up for its small size. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Empty your closet and divide its contents into categories. For example, keep out-of-season clothing separate from in-season staples.
2. Pare down your clothing by eliminating items you no longer wear.
3. Pack out-of-season clothing into vacuum seal bags to minimize the space it consumes.
4. Hang clothing by color to make it easier to sort through.
5. Install a pegboard wall in the closet for hanging items like belts, bags and scarves.
6. Store awkwardly shaped items like yoga mats and umbrellas in an umbrella stand.
7. Fold and stack clothing and store it in open storage cubes or cubbies, which keep pieces stacked and separated.
8. Store shoes in open cubbies so they remain organized.
9. Place dividers on the closet shelf to separate items stored out of reach.
