1. Identify the location for the built-in lockers. You need enough wall space to accommodate the structure, so the longest wall in the mudroom is likely the best choice.
2. Measure the area you have available for the lockers. Keep in mind the locker structure will stick out into the room, so don't measure too closely to doors or other structures that might become obstructed by the lockers. If the doors swing into the mudroom, open them fully while measuring so you are able to see exactly how far the doors reach.
3. Draw a sketch of the mudroom using the measurements you took to sketch in the lockers. Draw the full width of the lockers to create the basic footprint of the structure.
4. Divide the full length of the locker structure into individual lockers. A locker for each family member is the ideal layout to keep each person's belongings separate. Calculate how wide each locker is by dividing the total length by the number of lockers you want to include.
5. Determine how tall you want the lockers to reach. Building the lockers all the way to the ceiling with shelving or closed cabinets at the top makes efficient use of the vertical space by giving you extra storage.
6. Incorporate hooks or shelves at a lower height on the lockers to allow children to access them on their own. Determine if you want additional storage inside the bench on the lockers or in higher shelves.
7. Select the material used on the lockers. Wood is the easiest material to work with when building your own lockers. Covering the wall with wainscoting behind the lockers gives a decorative look.
