Install A Rubbermaid Closet

This Rubbermaid closet system was installed in a few hours' time.

Installing a Rubbermaid closet system requires basic skills, a few tools, and about a half day's worth of work, depending on the size of your closet. An organized closet makes it easy to find the things you need and to run your household more smoothly. A Rubbermaid closet system can make the difference between an organized area and an uncontrollable mess that is hidden behind a closed door. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use a screwdriver or power drill to remove any fixtures from the walls of the existing closet. You may need to use a hammer to pry any stray nails from the area as well. Fill any holes with spackle, using a putty knife. Allow the spackle to dry and sand gently.

2. Measure and mark where you want your closet's features to be affixed. Rubbermaid closet systems may include many different configurations of shelving, hanging rods and drawers, but they all begin with a series of pieces that are attached to to the wall.

3. Use a power drill to screw the brackets and frames to the walls in your closet. It may be necessary to paint over any of the former nail or screw holes that you have filled and sanded. This, however, is a matter of personal choice. Lay a level over the brackets to ensure that they are level.

4. Attach the hanging rod, shelves and/or drawers in the areas where you planned to put them. Most of these pieces will easily snap onto the frames and adjustable brackets, allowing you to move some of the pieces around if you want to change the layout of your closet.

5. Organize your items as you put them back into your closet. In clothing closets hang like items together; i.e., skirts with skirts and dress shirts with dress shirts. Some people like to take their organizing to another level by further organizing items into color schemes. Label any boxes that aren't transparent, and consider labeling drawers as well.
