The Size Of A Walkin Bathroom Closet

Having organized towels and supplies improves any bathroom.

A large closet in your bathroom will help keep the room neat. With sufficient shelf space, you can store cleaning products, beauty supplies and towels in an organized fashion. Walking room inside the closet permits you to check supplies you need or find items quickly. You can arrange the floor plan and shelving for a bath walk-in closet several different ways, and you might have to borrow room from a nearby room or closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Shelving on Three Sides

A walk-in space with shelving on three sides is one option. You will need a floor layout measuring 5 feet wide by 6 feet deep. Picture yourself opening doors 5-feet wide to reveal shelves on the left and right that measure 18 inches in depth from the front of the shelves to the walls. The shelving across the back of the closet will measure 24 inches deep from the front of the shelves to the back wall, which leaves walking room of 3 feet wide by 4 feet deep inside this particular closet.

Storage on One Side

Walking room on just one side of a walk-in closet is possible. Envision this space as a closet measuring 4-feet wide by 5-feet deep. Floor-to-ceiling shelves on one side will only measure 2 feet by 5 feet, stretching to the back wall. Your walking path inside the closet will be 2-feet wide by 5-feet deep -- all the way to the back wall of the closet. While standing inside the closet, you will face the shelving to make selections for supplies or replace items, such as towels and hand towels.

A Middle Walkway

A spacious closet will have a roomier walkway area. For example, a 6-foot-square closet can have floor-to-ceiling shelving on each side. Shelves can be 24-inches deep, which leaves a floor walking space that is 2-feet wide by 6-feet deep. In this layout you have no shelving across the back wall of the space.

Wide Walkway Layout

A wider closet is another option. Building a closet 7-feet wide by 5-feet deep gives you a closet you can step inside of to locate items or replenish supplies. In this type of closet you can build shelves 30-inches deep to hold towels and bed linen, for example. When you open sliding, folding or standard doors across the front opening, you can step inside to face all shelves that each measure 7-feet wide by 30-inches deep -- reaching from floor to ceiling. Your walking room will be 30-inches deep by 7-feet wide, so moving items in and out of the space will be very easy.

Dressing Table Room

A closet with dressing space requires generous dimensions. For example, a closet that is 6 feet by 8 feet allows for a dressing table, cabinets for storing personal supplies and room for shelving. A closet with dressing space can borrow space from a nearby bedroom. Getting dressed inside a bath area is often much more convenient than getting dressed in a bedroom. A table with a mirror and a sitting bench, for example, makes a bath area user-friendly. Having the dressing table hidden inside a closet instead of sitting in a bathroom allows you to hide clutter more easily.
