Decorate doors with colorful fabric.
Typically constructed of wood or fabricated material, sliding closet doors are often a bane of decorative style, as they offer little or no visual appeal. Since these doors operate by moving across a track, it's vital that the track not be obstructed, or you won't be able to open and close the doors. While a simple coat of paint or stain slightly dresses up these doors, there are ways that you can add more elaborate and eye-catching embellishments. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Paint a decorative pattern on the surface of the doors. Instead of painting the doors one solid color, use a variety of colors to paint a pattern. Lightly draw out the pattern on the surface of the doors with a pencil; different geometric prints or squiggly lines, for example. Select paint colors that correspond with or contrast with the room's color scheme. Use a paintbrush to paint over the pencil lines.
2. Feature a mural on the doors. Select a mural that suits the room's design; try a castle for a little girl's princess-themed bedroom or an image of the shoreline in a beach-inspired living room, for instance. Use a brush to paint over the mural's lines and apply colors that make the mural come to life. If art is not your forte, trace stencils to create the mural.
3. Hang decals on the sliding closet doors. Again, choose decals that work with the room's theme, such as whimsical trees in a rustic area or celestial objects in a space-themed room. Hang the decals directly on the surface of the doors.
4. Cover the doors with fabric. Measure the height and width of the doors. Choose a solid-colored or patterned fabric and cut it to the doors' dimensions. Apply self-adhesive hook-and-loop fasteners along the edges of the doors and along the back of the edges of the material. Apply a few hook-and-loop fasteners to the center of the door and the center of the back of the fabric. Press the fabric onto the door. To update the look, remove the fabric and replace it with a new fabric.
