Replace A Bedroom Closet Door With A Sliding Door

Bedroom closet doors are convenient but they take up space. The swinging door has to open in an arc so it often contacts other objects in a smaller room. A sliding closet door opens with much less space. It slides to the side, allowing more room in front of the doorway. If this sounds as if it might help in your room, bear in mind the project takes about two hours and requires the use of power tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Open the existing doors. Place a screwdriver under the pin in the bottom door hinge and tap it with a hammer to remove the pin. Repeat this step with the remaining two hinges and remove the door.

2. Unscrew the hinges from the door jamb with a power screwdriver and remove them.

3. Measure the width and length of the door with a tape measure and write it down. Purchase ready-made sliding closet doors to match this measurement at a home improvement store.

4. Measure the width of the top door jamb, cut this measurement by half and mark the center of the jamb with a pencil. Screw the top sliding closet door track into the jamb following these measurements, using the screws provided with the closet doors and a power screwdriver.

5. Hold a plumb bob string in the center of the track. Let the bottom of the plumb bob settle just above the floor. Mark where it settles with a pencil to find the center of the jamb on the floor. This gives you a straight, flush mount. Mount the bottom sliding closet door track to the floor with the provided screws and a power screwdriver using your mark as a guide.

6. Insert the rollers on the sliding closet doors and lift them into the sliding door track.
