Plan For The Size Of A Closet

Figuring out your needs can help you create a more efficient and organized closet space.

If you're planning to build a closet in your bedroom or kitchen from scratch, planning the size of your closet before you build can help keep you more efficient and organized later. Although you want to create a closet that's big enough to meet your needs, you don't want wasted space. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Create a list of all the things you plan to store in your closet. Common closet storage items include clothes, canned goods and cleaning supplies.

2. Count or estimate how much space you'll need for each type of item in your closet. For instance, if you typically buy four boxes of pasta, measure or estimate the amount of space the boxes would take up. Count the number of each type of clothing a person owns, such as skirts, dresses, pants or shirts, to size a bedroom closet. Use the standard measurement of each garment or accessory to figure out how much space you'll need for each item. Then, multiple that number by the number of items. For example, a typical pair of men's shoes is 9 inches wide and up to 12 inches long. If you have 10 pairs of shoes, you need at least 90 inches of 12-inch-deep shelf space to store those shoes.

3. Use your space estimates to sketch a basic scale outline of your closet. Include shelf placement and additional items, such as drawers, in your sketch. The height of the closet can vary; if it doesn't go all the way to the ceiling, you have space on top of it to store or display things. Keep in mind that a woman's dresses can be up to 68 inches long -- more than 5 1/2 feet -- so your closet should be at least 6 1/2 or 7 feet high.

4. Measure the space where you plan to put your closet. Re-evaluate your closet size or plan based on the measurements, if needed.
